Artist's Statement:
As an artist, I aim to create work that authentically reflects my individuality in all artistic spaces. My creative process is prompted by the unique choices I make to engage the audience. A common theme of the work I have presented is to challenge conventional concepts or ideas, inviting viewers to question familiar ideas through a different lens. Its purpose is to capture attention; to turn heads and make the audience look at sequencing of movement along with the emotion it evokes, whether it be confusion, fear, anxiety, joy, or shock. My work is made with intention to a greater meaning and open interpretation for my audience. The translation of art to the audience through movement and visuals allows for personal resonance, giving each viewer the opportunity to digest it in whatever way it resonates with them, making it even more impactful. I honor movement to be taken through perspective, meaning the audience takes away what they need to hear or what they're hoping to here, there may not always be an explicit meaning. My goal is for the audience to be challenged to think differently and encourage viewers to think beyond their usual point of view. This concept is executed by creating shapes with the body and understanding the dynamics of how the body moves and how we can utilize it as a tool to create a picture. Movement qualities are critical to the tone of the work being performed, which is why I honor the juxtaposition of different textures thrown within the same piece of work. It also supports the audience’s curiosity as to why the dancers are moving the way they are, and what message is being sent to the audience through the movement. As a choreographer, I hope to leave my audience with everlasting questions, promoting deeper thinking into the work, the dancing, and themselves.
